Associate Director of Student Services at Year Up Charlotte

Monica Thomas was born in Panama City, Panama. She is a first generation, college graduate, obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from North Park University, Chicago and a Master’s in Social Work from Loyola University, Chicago. She is married to her husband of 16 years, and they have four children together. She is a U. S. Army Veteran, a proven supervisor, practitioner, and community educator with expertise in adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), trauma-informed care, and community organizing. Monica offers over 12 years of service provision, outcome measurement, and program evaluation, including significant work in curriculum development, case management, and community engagement. Her career thus far has been focused on connecting families to resources, while helping them overcome experiences that impede progress. She has also worked diligently at educating her community about issues affecting children and families to include, Adverse Childhood Experiences, and the challenges of immigration and migration. The trainings she has acquired in Advanced Youth Development, Trauma Informed Care, and Mental Health First Aid has established her as a thought leader in the field of Public Service. She has cultivated an astute ability to bring the best out of people! She prides herself on leveraging relationships with community stakeholders to bridge the service gap that negatively impacts our communities.
