Karina Moreno Bueno

From Burlington, NC, Karina Moreno Bueno is a proud Latina with Mexican indigenous roots. Her family’s immigrant background largely influences her ambitions as she is pursuing a career in health and human services, as it pertains to immigrant and refugee health and cancer research. As an undergraduate student at Duke University, she is on a pre-medical track with a major in Biology, a second major in Global Health, and a certificate in Latino Studies. She aspires to become a doctor working to reduce health inequity among immigrant families in the U.S while conducting cancer research. Karina has experienced these disparities first hand as part of a lower socioeconomic immigrant Latinx family, which has in turn motivated her academic pursuits for knowledge to aid her contributions in reducing health disparities in her communities.
