Job Title: Assistant Professor of Media Studies at North Carolina Central University
Assistant Professor of Media Studies at North Carolina Central University
Gabriel Cruz is a first-generation college student and Chicano from North Carolina. He earned his PhD from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH where he studied culture, race, and comic books/superhero narratives. He currently works as an assistant professor at North Carolina Central University, and while he has only completed one year at NCCU he has been teaching at the college-level for nearly 10 years. Gabriel is committed to making academic material accessible, engaging, and practically applicable, both inside and outside of the classroom. He teaches courses on mass media, race, class, and gender, all of which are centered around how society and mass media influence each other. Gabriel applied for the LatinxEd Fellowship program out of a desire to develop his leadership skills and thus better serve students from marginalized backgrounds; particularly those who, like himself, are the children of immigrants and are first-generation students.
