Retired Educator from Guilford County Schools

Cheryl Kaufman began her teaching career in 1966 after graduating from UNC-G. Cheryl witnessed many changes in education over the years. She taught through Cross City busing for integration in the early 70’s, Open Classroom, Non-Graded Team Teaching in the 80’s. After years in the classroom, she got Gifted Education Certification. Teaching gifted youngsters became her passion. She was led to teach middle school and even high school content to her 5th graders. She also worked with their parents to help them realize their children’s challenges and theirs! After 32 years teaching in Guilford County, she retired. But soon she was called back to teach in the county's “priority” schools, those with the most diverse populations. Cheryl retired 3 more times but returned each year. Finally, after 47 years, she decided to just volunteer! In her career, she earned many recognitions and awards. She was Teacher of the Year for NCAGT Academically Gifted Teacher, N. C. Science Teacher of the Year, Guilford County Science Teacher of the Year, N.C. Museums Outstanding Teacher of the Year from Discovery Place Charlotte, Jamestown Elementary Teacher of the Year, and Science Teacher of the Year. Cheryl credits her longstanding dedication to teaching to her wonderful students and parents who always “made her day”!
