During her 31-year career, Carla Flores-Ballesteros has been a teacher and principal at all grade levels across two countries and six schools in linguistically, ethnically, and culturally diverse communities.Carla established the only Dual Language Initiative (DLI) in the nation that offers two opt-in dual language programs, English/Spanish and English/Urdu; the Urdu program is the first in the country. These programs serve EL students and provide an opportunity for English speakers to learn another language. The DLI received the 2019 GEA Spark Award and was included in the 2020 Guide to Exemplary Programs and Practices in U.S. Language Education.Her work to create supportive school environments reflective of the community has led Carla to be a four-time GCS Principal of the Year finalist. She was named GCS Elementary Principal of the Year in 2021.Carla has advocated for underserved students, staff, and communities through presentations at the state and national levels. She recently retired from GCS after 22 years of service and is currently a Program Manager at Participate Learning.
